EU restrictions on Ukrainian chicken, eggs and fruit: investigation to last until autumn
The European Commission is studying the situation on the market of poultry, eggs and frozen fruits to decide on the restoration of tariff quotas for Ukraine.
This was stated by EU Commissioner for Agriculture Janusz Wojciechowski during a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture, pap.pl reports.
He noted that there are currently no grounds to ban the import of any other goods from Ukraine, except for wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunseed to Bulgaria, Poland, Romania, Hungary and Slovakia. These goods are also allowed to transit through the territory of these five countries.
Wojciechowski explained that no official proceedings have been initiated yet due to the introduction of new rules that make the investigation procedure somewhat shorter. Thus, according to the current legal regime, the inspection will be completed in November, and according to the updated rules, if the procedure starts in June, it will be completed in September.
“The situation on the poultry market is not only local, but also pan-European, and it is likely that if imports do continue on this scale in the current months, there will be a return to the pre-liberalization tariff quotas,” he said.
The EC is also monitoring the situation on the egg market. There is an increase in imports.
According to Wojciechowski, the situation with frozen fruit will be studied during the season in the coming months.
“If during the season it turns out that there is a threat to Polish and European producers, the European Commission is ready to impose restrictions even in an emergency, express mode,” he emphasized.
The European Commissioner reminded that free trade with Ukraine is very beneficial for the Polish economy. In 2022, almost €10 billion worth of goods were exported from Poland to Ukraine, while less than PLN 6 billion (€1.254 billion) were imported. He also noted that this is 1/3 of all EU exports, which amounted to €30 billion. Germany is in second place with exports worth €4 billion.
