EU Preparing Interim Trade Regime for Ukraine After Suspension of ATMs
On May 7, European Commission spokesperson Olof Gill announced during a Brussels briefing that the Commission will propose transitional measures if the necessary amendments to the EU-Ukraine free trade agreement are not completed by the expiration of the Autonomous Trade Measures (ATMs).
“The Autonomous Trade Measures are set to expire on June 5. The Commission has no intention of extending them beyond this date,” Gill stated.
He emphasized that the Commission’s current priority is revising the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA) between Ukraine and the EU.
“We aim to enhance the DCFTA to provide long-term predictability and stability for operators in both the EU and Ukraine,” Gill noted.
According to him, this transition will strengthen Ukraine’s gradual path toward EU accession and address sensitive issues on the EU side, particularly in the agri-food sector.
“We are aware of the time constraints. Therefore, we are also exploring possible transitional measures in case the DCFTA revision negotiations are not finalized and implemented by June 6. We will discuss these potential transitional measures with Ukraine,” Gill added.
