Pork production will temporarily recover in 2024. EU piglet production reached a record low in 2023, while feed prices fell and demand for piglets increased. Record piglet prices tempted breeders to expand sow numbers in 2023. Because of the larger sow population earlier this year, hog litters will rebound in 2024. This cycle is expected to reach a new record low in 2025.

For pork production, slaughter is forecast to rise 0.9 percent this year and fall 1.7 percent next year. Trade in live pigs plays a minor role in the overall pig balance in the EU. EU pigmeat production is backed by higher slaughter weights this year. EU pork production is projected to increase by 2.0 in 2024 and decrease by 1.7 in 2025. The additional pork is expected to be produced mainly in Spain and will be destined for exports to the EU and third country markets, as well as in Central Europe, and most of this pork will be consumed within the bloc.

EU pork consumption is increasing slightly in Central and Southern Europe. However, both domestic consumption and exports will not be able to absorb the increased supply. The oversupply of pork is expected to increase competition and lower prices. These lower prices may increase the competitiveness of EU pork on the world market.
