EU officially returns duties on Ukrainian eggs and sugar

On July 2, the European Union reimposed duties on Ukrainian sugar and eggs, the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development has announced.
The new safeguard mechanism stipulates that the so-called “emergency braking” for 7 agricultural products is automatically triggered if imports reach the average annual import volume recorded between July 1, 2021 and December 31, 2023.
For eggs and sugar, the average is 23,188.96 tons and 262,652.68 tons, respectively.
Imports of eggs and sugar from Ukraine since the beginning of 2024 have already exceeded the volumes set by the tariff quota. Additional imports will continue under the most-favored-nation (MFN) tariff regime.
The Cabinet of Ministers introduced a zero quota for sugar exports to the European Union on June 1.
The Government has set a quota for poultry exports to the European Union. The quota for 2024 is set at 132.3 thousand tons, including 3.7 thousand tons of turkey meat and offal.
From June 19, 2024, until June 5, 2025, Ukrainian oats will be imported to the EU under the tariff quota from the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA), as Ukraine has exceeded the established quotas.
