EU is going for a record harvest of wheat and barley – COCERAL
The European trade association for grain, leguminous and oil crops, animal feed and other agricultural raw materials COCERAL presented its forecast for the production of grain crops in Europe in 2025. The new data significantly exceed the volumes that were published in June. According to new calculations, the EU is on track for a record harvest of wheat and barley, and the forecast for corn has been sharply lowered.
In the report for September, COCERAL specialists write that in 2025 the total grain harvest in the EU-27 and Great Britain will amount to 306.8 million tons. This is more than the 279.1 million tons collected in 2024, and significantly more than the 300.7 million tons forecast in June.
COCERAL, the European agricultural trade association, said wheat production (excluding durum) is expected at 147.4 million tons, compared with a forecast of 143.1 million tons in June and 125.6 million tons last year.
The forecast was raised for France, Germany, Poland and Southeast Europe due to favorable weather conditions and higher-than-expected post-harvest yields in almost all regions.
In 2025, the production of barley in the EU-27 and Great Britain will amount to 63.8 million tons, which is higher than the previous forecast of 59.2 million tons and the level of 57.5 million tons reached in 2024.
This year, the wheat harvest will be a record, and the barley harvest will be the second largest in the last 10 years.
The forecast for the corn harvest in the EU-27 and Great Britain for 2025 was sharply reduced, mainly due to unfavorable weather conditions in the south-eastern regions of the EU. The harvest is expected to be 56.7 million tons compared to the forecasted 60.6 million tons in June, which is 6% less than last year’s 60.2 million tons.
The rapeseed harvest in the EU-27 and Great Britain is estimated at 21.6 million tons, which significantly exceeds the forecast of 20 million tons made in June, and is almost 4 million tons more than the 17.9 million tons harvested last year. Experts explain this by the fact that in North-Western Europe, especially in France, the harvest results turned out to be better than expected.
