EU deforestation law has minimal impact on exports – GAPKI
The Indonesian Palm Oil Producers Association (GAPKI) remains positive about the impact of the European Union’s European Union Regulation on Deforestation (EUDR) on Indonesian palm oil exports to Europe.
GAPKI spokesman Edi Suhardi expressed confidence that the new regulations, which prohibit the import of deforestation-related products into the EU, will not seriously affect palm oil export volumes to Europe.
He emphasized that most Indonesian palm oil producers have already prepared their companies to comply with EUDR requirements for exporting to Europe, as they have long adapted to various international standards, including those of other countries.
One method of preparing companies for such requirements is through certification, which is modeled after the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO).
However, Edi added that smaller palm oil producers may feel the impact of EUDR more due to limited production capacity.
The Indonesian government had previously considered including palm oil in the government’s online monitoring system SIMBARA to improve accountability and export management.
