EU appeals to the WTO over China’s investigation into milk
The European Commission (EC) has begun consultations with the World Trade Organization (WTO) over China’s anti-subsidy investigation into the EU dairy industry.
The announcement was published on the European Commission’s website.
“The EU’s actions were triggered by a new pattern where China initiated trade remedies based on dubious allegations and insufficient evidence within a short period of time,” the statement said.
It is noted that the EC has been closely following the investigations from the very beginning, in full cooperation with EU exporting producers and Member State authorities.
“The Commission is determined to make full use of all available legal means to protect EU industry from abuse of trade defence instruments.
The consultations requested by the EU today are the first step in the WTO dispute settlement procedure. If they do not lead to a satisfactory solution, the EU may request the WTO to establish a commission to decide on this investigation,” the ministry said in a statement.
As you know, on August 21, 2024, China launched an investigation into subsidies under the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy for milk and cream with a fat content of more than 10%, as well as various types of cheese from the EU.
“The Commission is confident that these subsidy schemes are fully compliant with international rules and do not harm the Chinese dairy industry,” the EC summarized.
