Elevators in Kazakhstan cannot cope with the flow of grain. Deputies propose to speed up exports

Amid a bumper grain harvest, Kazakhstan is facing a difficult situation with grain sales and storage at elevators. Majilismen are asking the government to take urgent measures to move grain within the country and increase exports, ElDala.kz reports.
“Today, the situation on the grain market is difficult: there is a lack of storage capacity at elevators and no sales. Harvest prices are falling, mills are shutting down, and there are no clear prospects for shipment. The technical capacities of the elevators do not allow them to receive, dry and ship grain quickly. The harvest is accepted with an actual underestimation of quality,” said Majilisman Yerkebulan Mambetov in a parliamentary inquiry addressed to Deputy Prime Minister Serik Zhumangarin.
He noted that many elevators are loaded with grain from the Food Corporation. Therefore, it is necessary to resolve the issue of moving grain within the country, from the northern regions to free elevators in the southern regions. In addition, new grain sales markets are needed.
The deputy suggested considering purchasing a certain amount of grain from the Food Corporation, following the example of the 2011 harvest, which would help relieve the market.
“We also propose to consider issues that stimulate accelerated grain exports, subsidizing transportation costs for a certain period of shipment, accelerated VAT refunds, and others,” Mambetov said.
According to the MPs, the issue of stopping grain transit to European markets through Russia requires an immediate solution from the government.
