Egypt’s wheat imports to grow to 11.2 mln tons next season

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS USDA) forecasts that Egypt’s wheat imports will reach 11.2 million tons next season. Compared to the current season, which will end in June, imports will increase by 2%.
Solvent demand for imported wheat will increase due to population growth and the volume of foreign currency in Egyptian banks. With increased access to foreign currency, higher interest rates, and lower inflation, the Government of Egypt (GOE) hopes that the Egyptian market will soon stabilize and inflation will decrease.
USDA FAS forecasts that Egypt’s gross wheat harvest in the 2024/2025 season will rise to 9.0 million tons (8.87 million tons in the current season).
In response to high prices, the planted area and corn crop will increase. USDA’s FAS forecasts corn production at 7.6 (7.2) million tons. Imports are estimated at 7.7 (7.5) million tons.
In contrast, rice acreage and harvest will decrease to 0.6 (0.63) million hectares and 3.6 (3.78) million tons.
