Egypt is ramping up efforts to boost wheat production

Egypt is ramping up efforts to boost wheat production, recognizing the crop as a strategic cornerstone of national food security. Agriculture Minister Alaa Farouk has prioritized wheat development, with the ministry unveiling over 20 new high-yield bread and pasta wheat varieties that are climate-resilient, including MISR 5, 6, 7, Sakha 97, and Sohag 6, to be available to farmers starting next season. Egypt now ranks fourth globally in wheat yield per hectare.
Beyond seed innovation, the government is supporting farmers through subsidized certified seeds, technical assistance, modern farming equipment, and nationwide awareness campaigns. To prepare for the harvest season, the state has raised the procurement price to 2,200 EGP per ardeb, ensured immediate payments, deployed modern harvesting equipment across all regions, and opened wheat procurement in mid-April. These measures aim not only to strengthen domestic output but also to position Egypt as a potential exporter of high-quality wheat in the future.
Further development of the grain sector in the Black Sea and Danube region will be discussed at the 23 International Conference BLACK SEA GRAIN.KYIV on April 24 in Kyiv.
