Egypt Expands Arable Land as Part of the “Future of Egypt” Project

On May 21, 2025, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Sisi attended the opening of the 2025 wheat harvest season within the “Future of Egypt” agricultural project, located in the Sheikh Zayed Axis (formerly Dabaa Corridor) in Giza. A key highlight of the visit was the inauguration of the first phase of the “Future of Egypt” industrial city, a cornerstone of the country’s strategy to boost agricultural production. The project aims to bring 800,000 feddans (approximately 336,000 hectares) into agricultural use by September 2025.
Bahaa El-Ghanam, Executive Director of the Future of Egypt Authority for Sustainable Development, announced that the initiative targets the reclamation of 4.5 million feddans, with 800,000 to be cultivated this year. By 2027, Egypt’s total arable land is expected to reach 13.5 million feddans, strengthening food security and reducing the country’s $20 billion annual food import bill.
President Sisi emphasized the significant investments required to transform desert land into arable fields, estimating costs of 200,000 to 300,000 Egyptian pounds per feddan. He noted that the 800,000 feddans could generate around 30 billion Egyptian pounds annually, with an average income of 50,000 pounds per feddan. Sisi urged the private sector to engage actively, highlighting that the state has already developed the necessary infrastructure.
During the event, Sisi conducted an inspection tour, visiting storage facilities, a feed factory, a drying plant, and the silos area. He also virtually launched the harvest season for wheat and sugar beets and opened the Cairo headquarters of the Future of Egypt Authority for Sustainable Development. Sisi stressed the importance of modernizing agriculture, particularly by replacing livestock with more productive breeds to boost meat and milk production over the next five years.
