Prices for chicken eggs in the United States fell to an average of $2.577 per dozen (111.5 hryvnias) in January of this year, which is 59% less than the record high of $6.227 (269.4 hryvnias) in March of last year. This is reported by Bloomberg.

Outbreaks of bird flu destroyed the livestock and led to a sharp increase in prices a year ago. Empty shelves with eggs in grocery stores were a common occurrence. Buyers paid sky-high prices, trying to exceed the limits per person.

Today, the picture has changed. After increasing production to meet the frantic demand last year and protect against losses from bird flu, American producers are now facing a surplus.

The Trump administration last year increased imports to about 122.5 million dozen eggs, more than four times the 2024 level. Supply has largely outstripped demand, sending prices plummeting. Wholesale egg prices, which are usually passed on to retailers after a lag, hit their lowest level since 2017 at one point in January.

Some producers are already operating below breakeven. The U.S. Department of Agriculture predicts that the average price of eggs this year will be $1.25 per dozen (54.08 hryvnias). That’s 45 hryvnias per dozen.
