Early grain harvest in Ukraine is 2% lower this year – Minister of Agrarian Policy
This year, Ukraine harvested early grains by 2% less than last year, while the shortfall in late crops sometimes reaches 15%.
This was stated by Vitaliy Koval, Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, in an interview with Forbes.
“We did not receive about 2% of early grains compared to last year’s harvest. This group was not as affected as the late crops. Soybeans, buckwheat, corn, and sunseed suffered the most. They have a shortfall of about 10-15%, depending on the region,” the minister said.
According to him, the harvest reduction will not have a critical impact on the country’s food security. According to preliminary estimates, the corn harvest will amount to 25 million tons, sunseed – 12 million tons, and soybeans – 5 million tons.
Koval noted that in the new season, the structure of crops will remain at last year’s level. However, he expressed concerns about winter rapeseed due to the lack of moisture for its sowing.
The Minister predicted that about 5 million hectares of winter crops will be planted for the 2025 harvest.
As reported earlier, as of September 27, 2024, Ukraine harvested 50.4 mln tons of new crops from the area of 14.2 mln hectares.
