Due to the sunflower crop failure, Kazakhstan will face a shortage of edible oil
The National Association of Oilseed Processors expresses concern and asks the government to take measures to curb the export of sunflower seeds abroad.
In Kazakhstan, a gross harvest of sunflowers is expected in the region of 1.1 million tons. The forecast will come true if the weather favors farmers during the harvest. Meanwhile, although the projected volume of the harvest looks larger, it is not enough to meet the country’s domestic needs. Processing enterprises must process more than 3 million tons of sunflower per year. This year, only a third of this amount will be directed to them, and therefore in the new season of 2022-2023. they will again face a shortage: demand is three times higher than supply. To some extent, Russia will help in the supply of raw materials to the factories of the Republic.
Profile ministries, according to the association, should take into account the situation on the world market. Ukraine is the leader in the production of sunflower seeds. Now she cannot get a large harvest of this oil plant, because there is a war started there by Russia. European countries are also not in the best situation. They faced an unprecedented drought, which led many international experts to lower their forecasts for oilseed harvesting and olive oil production.
In order for Kazakhstan not to get into a difficult situation, the National Association of Oilseed Processors calls on the government to introduce restrictions on the export of raw materials. They give an example with grain: after supporting the export of wheat, the price of flour rose on the domestic market.
