Conab forecasts record grain production in Brazil in MY 2024/25
Thanks to the climate conditions and double harvests per year, Brazilian farmers are in a winning position and are consistently expanding their acreage. This is stated in the report of the National Supply Company (Conab), published on December 12.
Conab forecasts record grain production at 322.4 mln tonnes, up 8.2% compared to MY 2023/24.
The company estimates that 81.39 mln hectares will be planted this season, and if all production cycles of the year are taken into account, it corresponds to an increase of 1.45 mln hectares compared to the previous season.
“The rains that have come have had a positive impact on crops in the major producing states. In some places, we had short periods of no rain, but not such a long drought to affect the estimate of a new record of grain production in Brazil,” said Edegar Pretto, president of Conab.
Soybean planting is entering the final stages, and this week the planting rate reached 94.1% of the 47.37 million hectares allocated for oilseeds, according to Conab’s Harvest Progress report, as the weather favored planting and germination in most producing states. In some regions of Mato Grosso do Sul, Parana, Piauí, Tocantins and Maranhão, short periods of no rain were recorded. Despite this, weather conditions are favorable, and production is expected to reach 166.21 million tons, up 12.5% year-on-year, according to Conab.
With a 9.8% increase in the area allocated to rice, estimated at 1.77 million hectares, the crop is moving forward and has reached 86.6%. According to the Conab study, rice plantings are expected to increase on both dry and irrigated land, with production estimated at 12.1 million tons.
Corn production is forecast at 119.63 million tons, up 3.4% from the previous harvest, according to Conab. Production is expected to reach 22.61 million tons in the first harvest cycle. The sowing of the first harvest cycle is 70% complete, with favorable weather conditions in the main producing regions.
Harvesting of winter crops in 2024 is nearing completion, the company said. Wheat production is forecasted at 8.06 mln tons, which is 0.4% less than the previous harvest. This decline in production was mainly due to a 14.1% reduction in acreage in the southern states of the region, which account for 85.4% of wheat production in Brazil.
Further development of the grain sector in the Black Sea and Danube region will be discussed at the 22nd International Conference BLACK SEA GRAIN. EUROPE-2025 on February 13 – 14 in Prague.
