China’s grain production to exceed 700 mln tons
“China’s grain production has been stable at above 1.3 trillion jin for nine consecutive years and this year is projected to exceed 1.4 trillion jin for the first time,” Reuters quoted Zhang Xingwang, vice minister of agriculture and rural affairs, as saying.
When converted to the metric system, that’s 650 million and 700 million tons, respectively.
The forecast figure is 0.7% higher than the 695.41 million tons harvested in 2023, according to China’s National Bureau of Statistics.
At the same time, the PRC’s dependence on soybean imports remains, and corn crops still fall short of demand, an agricultural official said.
“The country’s food supply and demand are in a tight balance with no significant changes, so efforts to ensure a stable and secure grain supply cannot be relaxed,” he said.
The ministry has selected and developed a number of high oilseed and high-yielding soybean varieties to increase yields.
The ministry also plans to take measures to subsidize soybean processing and replenish stocks in storage facilities.
Another ministry official said that state-owned Sinograin will increase corn purchases to help boost farmers’ incomes and increase planted acreage.
