China is initiating an anti-dumping investigation against Canadian rapeseed amid Ottawa’s intentions to impose duties on imports of Chinese electric vehicles, steel and aluminum. This was announced on Tuesday by the press service of the Ministry of Commerce of China.

In 2023, the value of rapeseed exports from Canada to China amounted to $3.47 billion, and the volume of supplies increased by 170% year-on-year, but rapeseed prices continue to decline, which leads to suspicions of dumping, the Ministry said. The country will launch an anti-dumping investigation on imports of rapeseed from Canada in accordance with the WTO rules and relevant domestic laws, according to the statement of the Ministry.

“Canada has taken discriminatory unilateral restrictive measures against goods imported from China,” the ministry commented on Ottawa’s plans to impose tariffs on Chinese products. Beijing strongly opposes this and plans to use the WTO dispute settlement mechanism. Earlier, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that the country’s authorities would soon impose tariffs of 100% on imports of electric vehicles and 25% on imports of steel and aluminum from China. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said that Ottawa’s move could spoil trade and economic relations between the two countries. He called the Canadians’ actions “a typical protectionist approach.”

According to the Chinese customs, from January to July this year, Canada exported 2.65 million tons of rapeseed to China for $1.44 billion. Canada is the leading supplier of rapeseed to China.

In the current season of 2024/25 MY, Statistics Canada (StatCan) forecasts an increase in canola production in the country by 1.6% to 19.5 million tons, compared to 19.2 million tons in 2023 (USDA estimates 20 million tons), due to an increase in yield by 1.8% to 39.4 bushels/acre.
