China has suspended soybean imports from five Brazilian processing plants after inspectors detected sanitation violations in recent shipments. According to people familiar with the matter, the issue involved wheat grains treated with pesticides that were found mixed into cargoes of soybeans.

The suspensions affect two Cargill Inc. units, as well as facilities operated by Louis Dreyfus Co., CHS Agronegócios and Tres Tentos Agroindustrial SA. All four companies have yet to provide official comments regarding the temporary ban.

Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture confirmed that five plants were impacted, emphasizing that more than 2,000 Brazilian facilities remain authorized to export soybeans to China. The ministry stressed that Brazil continues to maintain a “solid and strategic relationship” with its largest agricultural trade partner.

The disruption comes at a time when China continues to buy significant volumes of Brazilian soybeans, even though it has recently resumed purchases from the United States following a trade truce. Earlier supply concerns during the US–China trade tensions pushed Chinese buyers to rely more heavily on Brazilian shipments throughout the year.

The suspension applies only to the specific affected units, meaning traders can continue exporting through other approved facilities. Some companies with cargoes already en route are evaluating options for redirecting shipments to alternative destinations. Similar contamination cases were recorded earlier this year, though related restrictions were later eased.
