China reserves additional soybean supplies from the US
Shipments of American crops to China are accelerating after a tense tariff war halted trade between the two countries for months. According to a shipping schedule seen by Reuters on Tuesday, at least six bulk carriers are scheduled to load soybeans at Gulf Coast terminals by mid-December.
American farmers and grain traders had been anticipating the start of shipments following trade talks between Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping in South Korea in late October and, according to the White House, Beijing’s pledge to purchase 12 million tonnes by the end of the year.
The seventh shipment of U.S. soybeans was loaded last weekend and is already en route to China. This is the first large-volume shipment of soybeans since May.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Chinese importers last month reserved nearly 2 million tonnes of U.S. soybeans for delivery in the 2025/26 marketing year, which ends in August 2026. Overall Chinese purchases remain significantly below pre-trade war levels.
