China may reduce pea imports in 2024/25

Over the past few years, China’s production of grain legumes has been declining as local farmers have been encouraged to grow high-forage crops such as corn and soybeans. At the same time, the country remains the world’s second largest importer of pulses, including the largest buyer of dried peas. China imported 3 mln tons of grain legumes in the 2023/24 season.
The US Department of Agriculture forecasts that China’s dried pea imports will fall 32% to 1.5 mln tons in the current 2024/25 crop year, “as trade sources expect global dried pea exporters to shift some of their exports to India.” The main suppliers of peas to China are Russia and Canada.
Recall that on March 6, China opened its market for Ukrainian peas, which is a great victory for Ukraine and opens the opportunity to increase supplies to the Celestial market. On March 20, 100% duties on Canadian peas will be imposed, which will make their export to China unprofitable.
Further development of the grain sector in the Black Sea and Danube region will be discussed at the 23 International Conference BLACK SEA GRAIN.KYIV on April 24 in Kyiv.
