China eases weed rules for Brazilian soybean imports
China has decided to relax requirements regarding the presence of weed seeds in soybeans imported from Brazil. This decision came after major trading companies reported shipment disruptions and temporary suspensions of exports due to new inspections by Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture.
A document from Brazil’s Secretariat of Agricultural Defense (SDA) notes that during a meeting with Chinese officials, it was acknowledged that “it is not possible to guarantee the absolute absence of weed seeds in soybeans due to production characteristics.”
As a result, Chinese authorities agreed that “a zero-tolerance criterion for weeds will not apply to soybean shipments from Brazil intended for domestic industrial processing.” The acceptable level of weed presence has not yet been set and will be determined through bilateral discussions.
A delegation from Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture is currently in China to address the issue and propose a specific sanitary protocol for soybean trade. Agriculture Minister Carlos Fávaro emphasized the importance of establishing clear rules that align with the product’s characteristics and end use.
The SDA document also states that vessel certification will be allowed even if lab reports detect weed seeds, provided other requirements are met, including the absence of treated seeds and live insects. The official tolerance level for weeds will be established later.
