Chicken consumption is growing in the EU

Chicken meat continues to occupy an important place in the European diet, and its popularity seems to be growing. According to a report by the Global Agricultural Information Network (GAIN) of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), chicken consumption in the European Union is expected to grow by 1.6% in 2024. This confirms the trend observed in recent years, when chicken meat has become one of the best sources of animal protein in the region.
Reasons for the growth in chicken consumption
Demographic growth is the main driver of chicken consumption growth in the EU. Population growth, as well as the influx of migrants, including 6 million Ukrainian refugees, is expected to affect demand. Population migration from the southern hemisphere is also contributing to increased consumption, as many new residents prefer chicken meat, which is more affordable than other types of meat.
Chicken meat is generally less susceptible to food market price fluctuations and inflation, making it a more attractive choice for consumers, especially in times of economic instability. While many low-income families are cutting back on animal protein by switching to cheaper carbohydrate products such as bread and pasta, chicken remains an affordable alternative.
Popularity of chicken meat in public catering
Chicken meat is particularly popular in the food service industry, especially in countries like Germany. This is because it is subject to fewer religious restrictions than beef and pork, making it a versatile choice for a variety of menus. With the growing diversity of cultures in Europe, restaurants and cafes are increasingly including chicken dishes to meet the needs of different population groups.
Changes in consumer preferences
According to market research, there is a tendency to replace more expensive meats such as beef and pork with chicken. This is due not only to price factors but also to changing taste preferences. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in cheaper chicken parts, such as legs and wings, which is also contributing to the increase in overall consumption. These parts of the meat are becoming increasingly popular both at home and in restaurants, where they are used to prepare various dishes.
Forecasts for the future
Demand for chicken meat in the EU is expected to continue to grow in 2025, when consumption will increase by 0.5%. This confirms the long-term trends associated with changes in demographics, economy and consumer preferences. It is important to note that chicken meat not only meets the needs of the population for an affordable source of protein, but also becomes a symbol of diversity and adaptation in a changing society.
Chicken meat will remain an important element of the European food market, and its role in the consumer diet is likely to grow.
