Carbon footprint of Ukrainian soybeans is almost 50% lower than the average European value
According to the Donau Soja Association, the carbon footprint of Ukrainian soybeans is almost 50% lower than the average European value.
This was stated by Volodymyr Pugachev, Executive and Regional Director for Eastern Europe of Donau Soja, during a discussion at the conference “Doing Agribusiness in Ukraine. Dialogue between Government and Business”.
Our main competitors in the EU soybean market have launched a myth that in fact the carbon footprint of products brought by large “panamax” from Brazil, per ton of soybean, is smaller than from the regional value-added chain. Because by train less is produced per unit of product, and by “panamax” it is good. But this theory does not work, since the logistics of this “panamax” are not taken into account. There is almost no railway in Brazil, everything is transported by trucks.
Since the EU is moving along a “green course”, decarbonization is a priority there, Ukrainian farmers also strive to reduce carbon emissions in order to be interesting to the European market and meet the requirements of European integration.
Volodymyr Pugachev also added that in the EU, annual soybean consumption is approximately 40 million tons, domestic production is a maximum of 3.3 million tons, despite the fact that there are subsidies and incentives for the industry.
