Canada’s canola processing has slowed to a trickle amid tariff restrictions

In May, the volume of canola seed processing in Canada amounted to 831 thousand tons, which is lower than both the April figures of 919 thousand tons and the May 2024 figure (920 thousand tons). The result was the lowest in the last 11 months.
The decline in global demand for meal and oil from the commercial Canadian version of rapeseed became increasingly noticeable after the introduction of 100% import duties by China in mid-March. Duties are considered the key reasons for the reduction in the processing volumes of Canadian oilseeds, Feedlot reports with reference to data from analysts at Oil World (Germany).
At the same time, soybean processing in the country increased to 158 (147; 154) thousand tons in May. However, the overall figure since the beginning of the season is still at a minimum level in the last 4 years – 1.28 million tons (-7% per year).
China is Canada’s second largest trading partner. Statistics Canada (StatCan) expects canola acreage to decline by about 200,000 hectares this coming harvest to 8.7 million hectares, down 2.5 per cent from last year.
