Canada to Increase Wheat Acreage While Reducing Canola in 2025

Canadian farmers plan to expand wheat plantings while slightly reducing canola acreage in 2025, according to Statistics Canada’s latest survey. Wheat area is expected to rise by 2.6% to 27.475 million acres, driven by strong global demand for high-quality wheat. Durum wheat plantings are projected to remain stable at 6.367 million acres.
In contrast, canola acreage is forecast to decline by 1.7% to 21.646 million acres, aligning with trade expectations. The decrease is attributed to lower profitability compared to other crop options. Barley plantings are also set to drop by 2% to 6.280 million acres, despite an increase in Saskatchewan. Meanwhile, oat acreage is expected to rise by 2.7% to 2.978 million acres.
Soybean acreage is projected to decline by 1.3% to 5.635 million acres, with Ontario, the largest producer, seeing a sharper drop of 7.8%. In contrast, corn plantings are anticipated to grow by 3.2% to 3.769 million acres, supported by a 5% expansion in Ontario.
Pulse crops show a mixed outlook, with pea acreage expected to rise by 9.5% to 3.517 million acres, while lentil plantings are forecast to decrease slightly by 0.8% to 4.175 million acres.
Overall, the shifting acreage reflects market trends, profitability considerations, and evolving demand for different crops, shaping Canada’s 2025 planting season.
