Canada increases canola crushing amid possible return to the Chinese market
In December, Canada’s commercial canola crushing volumes rose by 6% month over month to 1.08 million tonnes, marking the second-highest monthly result on record after October 2024, when about 1.1 million tonnes were processed.
Total canola crushing in Canada from August to December 2025 reached a new record of 5.1 million tonnes, compared with 4.9 million tonnes during the same period in 2024. The average canola oil yield since the start of the season increased to 42.3%, exceeding the 42.1% recorded in August–December 2024.
At the same time, analysts note that Ukrainian rapeseed meal could lose a key export market if Canada resumes shipments of canola meal to China. Traders report that Chinese importers are already booking Canadian canola meal cargoes for April–June shipment, while Canadian industry associations are publicly discussing a potential resumption of trade.
