Canada exported only 200 thsd tons of canola to China, in the first 4 months of the MY 2025/26
According to Oil World, in the first 4 months of the MY 2025/26, Canada exported only 0.2 million tons of canola to China (compared to 2.6 million tons in August-November 2024), which was due to the introduction of extremely high import duties by the PRC.
This season, the canola harvest in Canada has increased compared to last year from 17 million tons to a record 21.8 million tons, so the issue of exports to the main importer – China, which previously bought 6-7 million tons of canola per year, is very relevant.
It is expected that trade between the two countries will resume after the recent agreement to significantly reduce and partially eliminate trade tariffs from March 1, 2026.
China is a major market for many Canadian goods, including soybeans, whose shipments in August-November 2025 reached a record 1 million tons (+48% year-on-year), accounting for 36% of total exports (26% last year).
At the same time, discounts made by Canadian processors have increased demand for canola meal outside of China, particularly in the US. As a result, canola meal exports from Canada to the US during August-November 2025 increased compared to the same period of the previous year from 1.29 million tonnes to a record 1.42 million tonnes.
In addition, in the first 4 months of the MY 2025/26, Canada significantly increased its exports of rapeseed meal to the EU (by 0.4 million tons per year), the UK, Vietnam, Thailand, and South Korea, which compensated for the reduction in its supplies to China by 0.7 million tons.
