Bulgaria harvested 11.5% less sunseed than last year

This year, 11.5% less sunseed and 38.8% less corn were harvested in Bulgaria, industry media reported citing a report by the Bulgarian Ministry of Agriculture.
Harvesting of oil sunflower is 100% complete. Harvested volume in annual terms is 11.5% lower mainly due to a drop in average yield per hectare due to dry and hot weather in summer 2024, the negative effect of lower average yield is only partially offset by an increase in planted area.
Sunseed purchase prices rose by 3.3% during the week, the growth of sunflower prices in annualized terms reached 57.4%.
Earlier it became known that sunflower yields in Bulgaria fell 16.2% to 1.55 tons/ha. The U.S. Department of Agriculture FAS/Sofia estimates the reduction of oilseed crops in Bulgaria in the marketing year MY 2024/25 due to extremely hot and dry weather conditions in July and August to the lows of ten-year values.
