Brazil. Sugar production decreased by 63%
According to UNICA, in the first half of December, 8.83 million tons of sugar cane were processed in Central and South Brazil, which is 54.3% less than in the same period of the previous season.
Sugar production amounted to 347.8 thousand tons, which is 63.1% less than in the same period last year, and ethanol production decreased by 27% to 764.5 million liters (498.6 million liters of water and 265.97 million liters of anhydrous ethanol). Fifty percent of the total volume of ethanol produced during this period was corn-based ethanol – 379.16 mln liters, which is 35% more than in the same period of the MY 2023/24.
Since the beginning of the MY 2024/25 season, from April 1 to December 16, 611.85 mln tons of sugar cane were processed in Central and South Brazil, which is 4.3% less than a season earlier. Sugar production decreased by 5% to 39.71 million tons, while ethanol production increased by 3.3% to 31.93 billion liters (20.34 billion liters of water and 11.59 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol). Ethanol production from corn increased by 30% to 5.64 bln liters.
In the first half of December, 129 plants operated in Central and South Brazil: 111 sugar cane processing plants, 10 corn-based ethanol plants and 8 corn and cane ethanol plants. During the same period of the 2023/24 season, 185 plants processed sugar cane.
Since the beginning of the MY 2024/25, 206 plants have completed sugar cane processing. During the same period of the previous season, 82 factories completed sugar cane processing.
The amount of sugar removed from cane (TRS) in the first half of December reached 115.92 kg/t, compared to 118.59 kg/t for the same period in the MY 2023/24. The average TRS in the 2024/25 season (April 1-December 16) was 141.33 kg/t, up 1.23% compared to the same period last season.
