Brazil could replace US in China’s grain market

Brazil has doubled down on its efforts to boost agricultural exports to China amid a trade war intensified by US President Donald Trump, the South China Morning Post reported on March 8.
China has been buying soybeans from the South American country for decades. Demand for soybeans has been growing steadily. Top Brazilian government officials and industry representatives have wanted to secure long-term deals with Beijing before expanding production.
Brazilian exporters are seeking similar deals for other crops, especially sorghum and corn. Brazil was cleared in November to export corn and sorghum to China under deals signed by President Xi Jinping and Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
A senior cabinet official said Brazil’s agriculture ministry had been “actively encouraging farmers to expand production.”
