The European Union is the largest in the world rapeseed importer, importing between 5.5 M mt and 6.8 M mt annually. In the 2024/25 MY, the imports will be record 6.7 M mt. The EU significantly outpaces other major global importers—China and Japan—due to high demand/processing capacities and the growing role of biofuels in the energy strategy.
The Black Sea region plays an important role in meeting the EU’s rapeseed consumption.
In key producing countries (Canada, EU, Australia), forecasts indicate an increase in areas, driven by attractive price levels and growing demand in the fuel sector. In the MY 2025/26, global rapeseed area will be record high, exceeding 44 M ha.
In 2025, EU rapeseed area is expected to recover to at least 6 M ha (5.7 M ha in 2024), increasing rapeseed production after a decline in 2024 due to drought. Despite less than ideal weather conditions for sowing winter rapeseed, the weather turned out to be better than the previous year, which was one of the key factors for expanding areas.
The final rapeseed production in the Black Sea region in 2025 will largely depend on precipitation in January, February, and March, as some regions still experience the moisture deficiency. For winter rapeseed, a good snow cover will be crucial to withstand potential temperature fluctuations throughout winter and early spring.
