Bird flu spreads in Poland: 50,000 ducks and turkeys destroyed
The Chief Veterinary Officer of the Republic of Poland has confirmed two new outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza.
This is reported by the Polish publication AgroNews.
The first of the confirmed outbreaks concerns a commercial farm in the village of Kornatow (Lisewo commune, Chełm district, Kuyavian-Pomeranian voivodeship). The farm keeps 24.77 thousand ducks, samples were taken on November 26.
The second outbreak of avian influenza was detected in the village of Romanówek (Lubzha commune, Świebodzin district, Lubusz voivodeship). Samples were taken on November 27 at the farm, which keeps 26.8 thousand turkeys.
A full package of measures provided for by the EU was implemented in both places, including the elimination and disposal of livestock, cleaning and disinfection of facilities, epidemiological investigations, and the identification of infected and danger zones.
Since the beginning of 2025, 109 outbreaks of avian influenza have already been detected in Poland, 23 of them in captive birds and 47 in wild birds.
Since October 2025, 327 outbreaks of avian influenza have been confirmed in EU countries, the largest of which are:
- Germany – 135;
- France – 72;
- Italy – 23;
- Poland – 20;
- Netherlands – 18.
The virus has also appeared on a smaller scale in Spain, Denmark, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Ireland, Sweden, Hungary and Slovakia.
