Bangladesh shifts almost entirely to US soybeans and meal
As previously reported, Bangladesh has agreed to purchase U.S. soybeans and soybean meal worth $1.25 bln over the next 12 months. According to the U.S. Soybean Export Council (USSEC), this agreement effectively converts nearly all of the country’s commodity imports to U.S. origin.
USSEC CEO Jim Sutter noted that soybeans remain the leading agricultural commodity imported by Bangladesh, while local processors have significant crushing capacity to produce soybean meal for the aquaculture and poultry sectors. The shift toward U.S. products, he said, reflects confidence in quality, supply reliability, and the high sustainability standards of American producers.
Bangladesh also imports limited volumes of cotton and wheat, but soy-based products remain key to supporting the country’s livestock feed industry. USSEC representatives expect that growing demand for protein sources in Bangladesh will further expand the presence of U.S. soy in South Asian markets.
