Australia updates wheat export results for MY 2024/25: Shipments rise to 23.5 mln tons
Australia exported 23.49 million tonnes of wheat and durum in the 2024/25 marketing year (October 2024 – September 2025), according to updated data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. While the volume is below the record 31.67 mln t shipped in 2022/23, it exceeds the 19.59 mln t recorded last season, when a smaller harvest in Western Australia limited export capacity.
Bulk shipments accounted for 21.64 mln t, while containerised exports reached 2.4 mln t. In the boxed segment, the largest buyers were Thailand (329 kt), Malaysia (300 kt), and Indonesia (264 kt). In bulk, the top markets included Indonesia (3.96 mln t), the Philippines (3.21 mln t), and China (1.48 mln t).
Compared with MY 2023/24, Australia’s wheat exports declined, largely due to reduced demand from China, which had been the biggest buyer a year earlier. Meanwhile, the current harvest is roughly 30% complete, with ABARES’ September forecast projecting a 2024/25 wheat crop of 33.77 mln t.
Lachstock Consulting, as of October 30, expects further growth ahead: production in MY 2025/26 could rise to 36.83 mln t, with exports potentially reaching 24.59 mln t. This would allow Australia to maintain strong positions across Southeast Asian markets.
The upcoming November USDA WASDE report is expected to update global balances. USDA’s September figures — released prior to the US government shutdown — estimated Australia’s wheat output at 34.5 mln t and exports at 25 mln t, though these did not reflect October harvest progress.
