Australia saw sharp increase in chickpea and lentil exports in May

In May 2025, Australia exported 13,674 tons of chickpeas and 49,707 tons of lentils, the Zerno On-Line agency reports, citing the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Chickpea exports increased by 22% compared to April 2025, and lentils by 25%.
The largest buyers of Australian chickpeas in May were Pakistan (9,420 tons), the UAE (1,417 tons), and Canada (1,171 tons).
With the introduction of an 11% duty on the import of Australian chickpeas to India, supplies have virtually stopped. In April-May, not a single ton of chickpeas was shipped to India from Australia, although the bilateral trade agreement provides for a 50% duty reduction for 150,000 tons of chickpeas per year.
The largest buyers of lentils in May were: Bangladesh (27,938 tons), Sri Lanka (14,896 tons) and India (3,515 tons).
From January to May, Australia exported 96,648 tons of chickpeas, including 45,791 tons to Pakistan, 33,000 tons to India, 6,884 tons to the UAE. Lentil exports from January to May amounted to 194,528 tons, including 73,634 tons to Bangladesh, 43,471 tons to Sri Lanka, 30,754 tons to India, 26,733 tons to Pakistan.
