Australia reduced wheat shipments to world markets
Australian wheat exports in 2023-2024 are estimated at 19.5 million tons. According to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, analysts have lowered expectations for Australian wheat exports from 20 million tons.
Australian wheat exports in August totaled 1,212,229 tons, including 2,844 tons of durum wheat, writes Liz Wells in an article by Australian grain portal Grain Septgal: “Total shipments were down 18 percent from the 1,478,178 tons, including 2,503 tons of durum wheat, shipped in July, and reflect the usual seasonal decline seen in the current shipping year, which in Australia ended Sept. 30.
Containerized exports in August totaled 222,804 tons, with South Africa (55,000 tons) the top destination, followed by Thailand (35,272 tons) and Malaysia (33,741 tons).
In terms of shipments in August, the top three markets were the Philippines (245,012 tons), Indonesia (222,498 tons) and Yemen (104,690 tons).
According to Lachstock Consulting’s September wheat supply and demand report, Australian shipments indicate that a total of about 1.8 million tons will be shipped in August and September, bringing Australian wheat exports in 2023-2024 to 19.5 million tons.
On September 24, Lachstock released its latest estimate of Australian wheat production for the 2023-2024 season at 30.3 million tons, which is in line with other industry estimates of around 30 million tons and reflects a 2 million ton decline from previous estimates. This is largely due to dry conditions in South Australia, southern New South Wales and parts of Victoria and Western Australia.”
