Australia is preparing to send test batches of canola to China after a multi-year ban

Canberra is negotiating with Beijing to send five trial shipments of canola in a first step toward lifting a multi-year ban, sources told Reuters.
China, the world’s largest canola importer, buys most of its canola from Canada, but those shipments could be curtailed by Beijing’s anti-dumping probe. China has imposed 100 percent tariffs on Canadian canola meal and oil this year amid diplomatic tensions.
Australia, the world’s second-largest canola exporter, lost market access to China in 2020, largely because of China’s phytosanitary requirements over blackleg fungus.
Chinese and Australian officials are finalizing a framework agreement to implement Beijing’s phytosanitary requirements to prevent the fungus from spreading, industry sources told Reuters.
