Assessing the Soy China Initiative in Brazil

Brazil and the People’s Republic of China (PRC) are in the early stages of potentially developing a specialized soybean supply chain tailored to Chinese sustainability and quality standards. Inspired by the successful Boi China beef model, this production line could strengthen Brazil’s dominance in the soybean market while directly challenging U.S. exports.
Assessing Brazil’s Soy China Initiative
A recently proposed sustainability initiative between Brazil and the People’s Republic of China (PRC), commonly known as “Soy China,” aims to develop a specialized soybean supply chain grown in accordance with the sustainability and quality standards defined by the PRC.
Essentially, it is a customized, exclusive soybean production model designed to meet the needs and standards of Chinese imports, especially regarding environmental, social, and traceability criteria. This new model was mainly inspired by the idea of “Boi China” (“China Beef” in Portuguese), which refers to Brazilian cattle and beef that is produced specifically to meet Chinese import standards.
“Boi China”, introduced to the Brazilian market in 2019, is a certification or production standard for beef that meets Chinese sanitary and quality requirements. These standards are more stringent than those for other markets and include the following key characteristics:
