Argentine farmers are cultivating the last fields of a magnificent wheat harvest
The country’s two main grain exchanges estimate the 2025/26 wheat harvest will be a record 27.1–27.7 million tonnes.
According to official data, with only a few hectares remaining until harvest, the 2021/22 wheat harvest is expected to exceed the country’s record of 22.2 million tonnes by 25%.
PERFECT SEASON
Argentina, one of the world’s largest grain suppliers, relies on its agricultural sector to earn foreign currency.
Dry conditions have made harvesters’ work easier on rural roads and fields across the country, as Argentina experienced near-perfect weather throughout all stages of wheat’s development, leading to “unprecedented” yields, according to the Rosaria Grain Exchange.
“During the winter, when the crop was in the vegetative stage, we experienced low temperatures, which is exactly what it needs.” “This was followed by a period of very consistent rainfall, which led to good tillering, good ear development, and finally, excellent grain filling,” said Ugrotte.
According to the producer, only 20-30% of the wheat acreage in Benito Juarez remains unharvested, marking the end of an “excellent” season. Nationally, according to the latest government data, only 13% of the acreage remains unharvested.
While producers are packing the last of their wheat, in neighboring fields, Argentine soybeans and corn are approaching maturity, and Ugrotte says their prospects are also good.
“As for the main crops, the weather is also favorable,” he said. “The harvest of the main crops is still dependent on the January rains, but the outlook looks promising.”
