Argentina’s once-thriving wine industry is facing its worst crisis in 15 years. Winemakers are grappling with record-low domestic consumption, declining exports and low yields, according to The Washington Times.

Wine consumption in Argentina fell to a historic low of 15.7 liters per person in 2025, according to the National Institute of Viticulture (INV). For comparison: in 1970, Argentines consumed up to 90 liters per person per year. In addition, 1,100 vineyards have closed across the country, and their area has decreased by 3,276 hectares.

Fabian Ruggieri, president of the trade group Argentine Wine Corp, attributes the decline to a “dramatic decline in purchasing power” that began in 2023. He said the trend is most pronounced among middle- and low-income consumers who traditionally drank wine every day.

According to Federico Gambetta, director of Altos Las Hormigas winery, the crisis is being exacerbated by changing consumption patterns. While the older generation preferred strong, full-bodied wines, younger consumers are prioritizing other qualities, such as affordability, freshness, and lightness. These qualities are usually found in white and rosé wines.
