Argentina has secured the resumption of chicken exports to the EU
Senasa confirmed the lifting of the sanitary barrier imposed due to the bird flu outbreak in the country. This opens a key market that could revive the industry.
Argentina has secured the reopening of the European Union (EU) poultry market, bringing hope to a supply chain that had faced serious difficulties, publicly expressed through conflicts within the country’s largest poultry industry, Granja Tres Arroyos, which controls the Avex plant in Reducción.
This plant was one of those that traded with Europe until the flow of goods was interrupted by the bird flu outbreak. Now that this health crisis has ended, Senasa announced that Europe has once again lifted trade barriers.
Specifically, the health agency reported that the decision by European countries “reflects the joint work of the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries of the Ministry of Economy, the National Service for Agri-Food Health and Quality (Senasa), and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which allows for the restoration of a high-value sector for national products.”
Regulation (EU) 2026/278 confirmed that Argentina will be able to resume poultry exports on March 1 after the country’s health status as free from highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), in accordance with recommendations from the World Organization for Animal Health (WHO), is restored.
Representatives of the poultry industry quickly analyzed the scenario that will unfold starting next month: “This is very positive for the industry because it will reduce the supply of chickens, leading to a corresponding increase in prices,” a source told Tranquera Abierta.
The same executive explained that “the impact of bird flu has led to production costs exceeding selling prices for a long time, over the past three years,” added a poultry industry representative interviewed by this media outlet.
However, he noted that “China remains closed and accounts for 50% of exports. I hope this measure will help, but the problem is still far from being completely resolved.”
Figures before the lockdown
According to Eurostat, in 2024, the volume of these goods and medications supplied to EU markets will reach €12 million, a 140% increase compared to 2023.
Similarly, from January to November 2025, Argentina’s exports to the EU totaled almost €17 million, a 41% increase compared to 2024.
The recovery of this market is based on the control and eradication of autoimmune pneumococcal dermatitis in agricultural production, as well as on the restoration of Argentina’s sanitary status as a country free of this disease.
