Algeria purchases 690 thsd tons of wheat at tender
Algeria’s state grain agency OAIC purchased around 690 thsd tons of milling wheat in an international tender that closed on March 26. According to traders, the volume significantly exceeded the typical minimum tender size of 50 thsd tons.
The purchase price was estimated at about $272 per tonne on a C&F basis (including cost and freight). Market participants noted that a large share of the wheat is likely sourced from the Black Sea region, particularly Ukraine, Romania, and Bulgaria.
Under the tender terms, shipments are scheduled in two periods: June 1–15 and June 16–30. If sourced from South America or Australia, shipments are expected one month earlier. Final estimates of volumes and origins may still be subject to revision.
Algeria remains one of the world’s largest wheat importers and has traditionally relied on European suppliers, especially France. However, in recent years, Black Sea exporters have been expanding their presence, while French shipments have declined amid diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
