New agricultural centers will strengthen Algeria’s food autonomy, the country’s Agriculture Minister Youssef Cherfa said on January 17.

Algeria’s agriculture minister revealed details of a program to create large agricultural centers aimed at strengthening the country’s food autonomy. The initiative involves the deployment of large agro-industrial centers specializing in grain production and corn cultivation.

According to the minister, the main objective of the program is to strengthen the country’s food self-sufficiency. The project is planned to be implemented in the Suf region.

“The initiative is being carried out in accordance with the recommendations of the supreme authorities,” Youssef Cherfa emphasized.

In addition to enhancing food security, the establishment of such agrarian centers will contribute to the accumulation of local technical expertise.

Note that agriculture in Algeria plays a key role in the economy. Traditionally, Algerian farmers have been engaged in growing cereals, olives, citrus fruits and various vegetables. Nevertheless, dependence on food imports remains high. Algeria imports a significant portion of the food it consumes, making the country vulnerable to fluctuations in world food prices and global economic crises.
