African countries are looking for a new supplier of wheat due to the decline in the harvest in France
Due to the decline in the wheat harvest in France, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia are considering replacing it with another supplier, Reuters reports.
The demand for wheat in Africa continues to grow due to the constant increase in population – from 69 million in 2000 to 97 million in 2024. Concerns about the shortage of French supplies are also noted in the South of the African continent.
According to forecasts, the wheat production in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia will decrease in 2024 to 5.7 mln tons compared to 7.3 mln tons in 2023, while the total demand for wheat is estimated at 32 mln tons. The countries will need to import 19.5 mln tons of wheat against 17.1 mln tons in 2023.
According to the forecasts of Argus Media, the countries of South Africa are considering the possibility of increasing the imports of Russian wheat.
As a reminder, France is expected to harvest the worst wheat crop in more than 40 years in 2024.
