Canadian PM says he will engage in discussions with China over canola situation

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Wednesday that he and other top officials would work to resolve a dispute with China over tariffs Beijing has imposed on canola.
Last month, China imposed a preliminary 75.8% tariff on Canadian canola seed imports following an anti-dumping investigation, escalating a year-long trade dispute. China is now Canada’s largest market for canola seed.
“We’re going to work hard to get that done… our international trade minister has been involved, our foreign minister has been involved, I’m going to be involved in finding a solution for our agricultural relationship,” Carney told reporters in Toronto.
Canada, the world’s largest canola exporter, shipped nearly C$5 billion ($3.63 billion) in canola products to China in 2024, about 80% of which was seed. High tariffs on canola seeds, if left in place, will likely lead to a halt in imports from China.
