Types of mineral fertilizers in Ukraine
Every one of us loves delicious dishes made from high quality products. There are different crops sold in the market. All of them meet quality standards. Centuries-old and proven methods of feeding plants with the necessary elements are used for their cultivation.
A very important point in working with fertilizers is the ability to distinguish mineral fertilizers. The very first part is the division into:
- Simple (only one nutrient is present);
- Complex (several major and minor elements are present);
- Microfertilizers.
The most common in use are simple fertilizers. These include: nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium. Nitrogen fertilizers are usually the most common among agrarians. Nitrogen fertilizers contain different nitrogen content depending on the type of product and the form of the active ingredient. However, phosphorus ones are needed by plants continuously. They are obtained by sawing phosphorus-containing rocks. Phosphate is the result of a chemical process. The third type is potassium. Potassium nutrition is responsible for the watering of the cells. All these species are excellent for development, but slowly. A compound fertilizer with all the nutrients is used to provide the crop. Examples are potassium nitrate, ammophos and magnesium-ammonium phosphate. In addition to these, complex-mixed fertilizers are very common in Ukraine. These include nitrofoska, fertilizer nitroammofoska (azofoska) and others. And the last microfertilizers, which are mandatory for plants. Potassium, phosphorus and nitrogen are the most important elements.
Fertilizer prices in 2026
In general, sales of mineral fertilizers in Ukraine remain an important part of agricultural production support. Product availability and cost depend on imports, domestic production, logistics, exchange rates, seasonal demand and energy prices.
In 2026, mineral fertilizer prices in Ukraine are shaped by several key factors: the cost of natural gas, the situation on the global fertilizer market, import supplies, production costs of Ukrainian enterprises, the exchange rate and delivery terms. Therefore, farmers should focus not on one fixed average price, but on current offers from suppliers in their region.
Ukraine has its own production of mineral fertilizers, but the domestic market also depends on imports. The ratio between Ukrainian products and imports affects the availability of certain types of fertilizers during the active purchasing season.
The price per 1 ton of mineral fertilizer depends on the type of product, manufacturer, form of release, delivery terms and batch size. Farmers most often monitor the cost of the following positions:
- ammonium nitrate;
- urea;
- UAN;
- NPK fertilizers;
- superphosphate;
- potash fertilizers.
Dynamics and forecasts of mineral fertilizer prices in Ukraine
Despite the harsh circumstances of the war, the Ukrainian fertilizer market continues to operate, although it remains sensitive to changes in energy prices, imports and logistics. The high cost of fertilizers in previous seasons forced some agricultural producers to revise application rates and plan purchases more carefully.
Agrarians typically use the classic ratio where a ton of nitrate should not cost more than 2.5 tons of wheat, relative to urea it is 3.0-3.5 tons of corn. These ratios remain a benchmark for assessing the economic feasibility of fertilizer application, but actual decisions depend on grain prices, the cost of a specific fertilizer, expected yields and the financial capacity of the farm.
In addition, imports of fertilizers increased significantly when only two large chemical plants – Cherkassy Azot and Rovnoazot – remained in operation in Ukraine after the beginning of the Russian aggression. The domestic market continues to depend on import supplies and the work of Ukrainian producers, in particular nitrogen chemistry enterprises. According to 2025 results, Ostchem plants produced 1.57 million tons of mineral fertilizers, which was almost 13% less than in 2024.
Currently, the key factors for the market remain seasonal demand, import availability, natural gas prices, exchange rates and the ability of Ukrainian plants to maintain production. With stable supplies, farmers can purchase the necessary fertilizers, but the cost of individual positions may change during the season. Therefore, it is worth speaking cautiously about a rapid return of the market to the pre-war level.
