Ukraine grows non-GMO soybeans according to European standards
Ukrainian farmers, despite the great difficulties caused by Russian aggression, steadfastly adhere to sustainable agricultural production and contribute to global food security.
This was stated by Taras Vysotsky, First Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, during the international non-GMO summit, according to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy.
“Farmers continue to sow soybeans, a vital crop for supplying protein to Europe. In 2022, Ukraine sowed more than 1.5 million hectares and harvested 3.7 million tons of soybeans, which is 7% more than in 2021. Since the beginning of 2023, about 1 mln tonnes of Ukrainian soybeans have been exported to the EU,” said Taras Vysotskyi.
He emphasized that Ukraine, as a candidate for EU accession, adheres to the latest changes in EU legislation. In particular, it has joined the rules on combating deforestation. And starting from the end of 2024, some agricultural products, such as soybeans, will be grown only on lands where no deforestation has occurred.
In addition, according to Taras Vysotsky, in 2022, about 658 thousand tons of soybeans in Ukraine (17.5% of total production) were certified as sustainable non-GM soybeans. This guarantees strict compliance of soybeans with EU regulations on plant protection and greenhouse gas emission reduction.
